Some Local Attractions
Devizes itself is wonderful little town which offers a wide range of independent shops hidden in small alleyways and yards to explore. From gift shops galore to antique shops to clothes shops to jewellers there is something for everyone. Coffee shops also abound when refreshments are needed - everything from Costa to the wonderful Dolce Pani and Brogans all offering fabulous drinks and light lunches. Don't forget to visit the wonderful Wiltshire Museum in Long Street too - a treasure trove of delights!
Avebury Stone Circle
A 15 minute drive from Devizes, Avebury is a neolithic stone circle which offers wonderful walks through ancient grasslands around the village of Avebury. There is a fascinating museum and coffee shop as well as the newly restored Avebury Manor which is refreshingly hands-on for children!
This iconic monument needs no introduction. A 30 minute drive from Devizes it makes a wonderful day out. The new visitor centre is informative and well laid out and with the closure of the road, the monument is starting to feel like it would have done originally. Soon the A303 will be in a tunnel too! The Henge Hopper bus can take you there and to Avebury too.
Caen Hill Lock Flight
A short walk along the towpath from Devizes town centre can be found this incredible feat of engineering. A flight of 29 locks rising over 200 feet in 2 miles between Rowde and Devizes they are well worth a visit - and there is a very good coffee shop at the top! This is a great cycle route too if you are feeling a bit more energetic!
Devizes is home to the world famous Wadworth Brewery and the town is very proud of the horse drawn dray which still delivers the beer to the town centre pubs. Brewery tours are available and are highly recommended but booking is essential.
Marlborough High Street
20 minutes away by car can be found the wonderful Marlborough High Street - for the bigger high street names as well as the more unusual boutiques this is the place to go. You can spend a whole day here exploring this lovely town.
These are just a few examples of the wonderful things to see in and around Devizes and the larger Wiltshire area. There are also seven white horses to be found and explored, numerous walks and cycle routes, as well as the many and varied restaurants, pubs, cinema, theatre, music clubs and so on.
